Like many corporate customers, the worldwide headquarters of a major designer, marketer and distributor of athletic footwear and apparel consists of many discrete buildings. The distribution of cable TV throughout the campus has been both technically challenging and expensive.

The customer challenged its local A/V integrator to investigate alternative solutions. These included contract renegotiations with the local provider, satellite TV (DirecTV and Dish Network), and other solutions like Verizon’s FIOS Cable TV.

After numerous discussions and cost analysis, DirecTV was deemed to provide the most cost-effective delivery of TV into the campus – but distribution throughout the campus presented a challenge.

The existing coaxial cable infrastructure was designed for analog cable TV distribution, and as such, a major overhaul to replace noisy components – such as taps, splitters, amps, connectors, terminations – from central closets out to hundreds of displays was considered.

In addition, one of the new requirements was to deliver HDTV programming to executive offices located throughout the campus. Many of these locations did not have coaxial cable in place, nor did they have adequate power or space for set top boxes.

A flexible solution using the AMX® Endeleo UDM-0102 Multi-Format Distribution Hub and Endeleo UDM-RX02 Multi-Format Receiver was demonstrated and successfully piloted at the customer’s location.

For a particular building or floor, coax infrastructure was installed to deliver satellite signals from the roof to each IDF closet. High-definition STBs were installed in these closets in a secure, well ventilated and powered environment, and Endeleo UDM-0102s were used to distribute HDTV (Component - YPbPr) and stereo audio from the closet out to the display using the Cat5e infrastructure that was already in place in the facility. Then, using the unique IR pass thru capability of the Endeleo product line, users in their offices were able to use handheld IR remotes to control their STBs, even though they were up to 1,000-feet away in a locked closet.

To provide an even greater TV viewing and control experience, the AMX Engineering staff updated the system firmware for the Endeleo UDM-RC02 Multi-Format Remote Control, enabling native support for DirecTV IR Remote Controls that ship with DirecTV HDSTBs.

From a user perspective, the functionality and video quality are identical to that experienced with local STBs. In fact, at the customer request, AMX re-programming also enabled functions currently available on the remote control, such as Menu, Setup and Interactive TV, to be disabled. Added functionality is provided using the second available input port (Input B) on the UDM-0102.

In public areas, a Digital Signage Player can be connected to Input B, which can then switch between sources either upon user request at the display, management request from the built in web server, or as part of a pre-defined schedule built into the UDM-0102. In some cases, users chose to have a second TV source (HD cable TV STB) installed to receive cable-only programming or local channel programming – but still use the DirecTV remote to select and control this second source.
